The Role Played By Organic Food In A Healthy Diet

“Organic” literally took the country by storm a few years ago and became the fad. Famous persons became the prime practitioners of organic diet, fashion icons publicly declared their use of organic cloth and every one are making a beeline to the Farmers, markets. Some people were in full agreement with the thinking and went with the flow. There might have been, to others, grave experiences that prompted them to adopt an organic lifestyle. It is also possible that some were interested enough to want to know more. Anyway, a large segment of the population is influenced enough to shift to what they thought as living a healthier life, which benefits the suppliers in terms of higher sales as well as the consumers who are willing to pay a little more in exchange for a healthy diet. Thus, why choose organic and is it the correct way?

Food is considered organic if it is in its natural state without artificial additives such as preservatives, chemicals, fertilizers, and colorings. In meat production, there are no antibiotics or growth hormones involved in the raising of animals.

There are many reasons why going organic is good. Some are the following:

Pesticides are not or are barely present in organic food, in contrast to conventional food that may contain up to 70% more pesticides. Artificial food colorings and flavors, preservatives, nitrates and sulphites, artificial enhancers or monosodium glutamate (MSG) are not found in organic food. Organic food is improved with the use of natural substances like honey and grape juice. Organic food is richer in nutrients – it has been shown that it contains more Vitamin C, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and salicylic acid.

In the production of organic livestock, antibiotics or growth boosters are not used, whereas non-organic livestock makes intensive use of artificial substances for larger and fatter meat products. Cattle for example are grown and developed naturally without infusion of synthetics in their systems. Genetically engineered (GE) ingredients as well as GE seeds or irradiation methods are not used or applied in organic foods. In lieu thereof, farmers rely on their practice of rotating crops and using natural fertilizers to enrich the fields when cultivating their products. Therefore, would you choose organic? The answer should be a big and emphatic yes. In order to lessen the financial burden in consuming organic foods, better start on a few basic items such as dairy and farm product, and add other organic product as your financial condition will allow.
